Martin lived with his sister Delia and her husband John Ahearn in theUnited States for some time. He served in the US Army during World War 1and was badly wounded and gassed. He recovered and eventually returned toIreland. During the depression he lived very well on the life long pension he received fromAmerica to compensate for his wounds.
